Yep, quite an anomaly. What’s funny is that Halloween has all the features they claim to hate about slasher films whereas many of the genre do not (ie primarily women being stalked and killed, shots from the killer’s POV, a male killer with homicidal impulses rooted in sexual problems, etc).

@joezam44 But there was also good cinematography In “Halloween” and the woman was fighting back. Lots of the same ideas but much better execution than virtually all other slasher pictures. Also, wasn’t it really the first of the genre to hit big? So it had the advantage of being somewhat original as well.

@Skulldini So true. As I said, it was the first of the genre to hit really big (aka: commercial blockbuster). I sure didn’t mean to imply it was the first masked psycho killer movie–probably you could look back to Lon Chaney in “Phantom of the Opera” for that–probably further!

@FloraWest No, Halloween didn’t invent the masked psycho killer genre,.. it merely popularized it, thats all. There were some earlier films like Blood And Black Lace, The Town That Dreaded Sundown and Alice,.. Sweet Alice ( to name a few ) which did it previously, but none of them were the comercial blockbusters that Halloween was.
